Michelle Jankovic director of local disability service business Helping Hand Is Here, was interviewed on local radio station CASEY RADIO [3SER] [97.7fm] Women of Today segment by Amanda Stapledon, Deputy Mayor City of Casey. Sharing her passion to support our disability community and her achievement of being a finalist in the prestigious Casey Cardinia Business Award 2014.
Recognised for their disability service workshops and training, individual disability consultancy, online product and service disability directory and portable medical notebook organiser, competition judges agreed that Helping Hand Is Here deserved celebration.
Casey and Cardinia local businesses were able to apply with a lengthy application process which Michelle completed over three weeks. Michelle Jankovic: “I see my business hiding behind a computer, phone calls, database entry, but my favourite part is sitting face to face with people with disability, their carers and families and running workshops which is the surface to my business. The application process allowed me look down on my business and assess it from an outside perspective.”
On Thursday 14th August Casey Cardinia Business Awards 2014 finalist function show cased some of the region’s top local businesses. Michelle Jankovic: “Judges came out to my business to meet me and have a site visit. Then at the finalist function we all sat patiently with excitement. Waiting nervously while category finalists were announced. Then it was my turn. Helping Hand Is Here was called first and it took a few seconds to register. My husband said it felt like we were at the Logies with all the people watching and cameras going off.”
Amanda Stapledon: “If you heard a Yahoo, in the back of the gallery, it was me. I know how hard you have worked to get this together. I got the elbow, councillors don’t yahoo.”
Helping Hand Is Here has several product and services within their community based business.

Michelle Jankovic: “That is one point of difference Helping Hand Is Here brings to the local community. I understand what you are going through, I have been where you are walking.”
Helping Hand Is Here is growing at a rapid rate, connecting individuals to disability support in different ways. Michelle Jankovic: “There is a local coffee shop where you will find me pondering out the window and brain storming where is the business going, what else I can bring to the business to support the community. I don’t like hiding behind a desk, I like being in community and with that brings opportunity to talk to individuals. Someone walking past in crutches that I can then and there on the spot help.”
Michelle Jankovic knows how hard it is to find help. Never receiving a case manager she was then forced to start the huge search herself to find support for her son born 8 weeks premature resulting in Cerebral Palsy with a right hand difference. This lived experience and meeting many other families in her situation, drove Michelle to do something to help others.
Michelle Jankovic also had a daughter born 8 weeks premature. Michelle Jankovic: “Having a second child born early makes it extremely hard to continue with my first child’s early intervention, daily therapy so family support was the key.”
In her busy schedule, Michelle Jankovic sits on City of Casey Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee. Providing valuable insight and experience as a mother and carer of a child with a disability. Michelle Jankovic: “Being a proud member allows me to hear from grass-roots what is needed within our local community.”
Amanda Stapledon: “You know what I like about you Michelle, you ask for what it is you need, you don’t wait for someone to say I will give you a hand with that. You are actually very clear about what is going to help you get the very thing you are trying to achieve.”
Helping Hand Is Here assists individuals to connect directly to disability and medical condition funding, concessions, support, services, tools and resources.
Amanda Stapledon: “We have lots of services which are funding reliant that provide their prescribe services and they are wonderful and that is fantastic, but we haven’t had anything like this before. I have been around the traps for in terms of disability sector.”
From Michelle Jankovic lived experience Helping Hand Is Here is providing our disability sector assistance so other people with disability, their carers and families are not left in the dark.
Amanda Stapledon: “Michelle you have identified a problem, you have experienced it yourself, and now you have put together a wonderful solution that will help so many families in the future.”
The Winners of the Casey Cardinia Business Awards 2014 will be announced at a Gala dinner on Thursday 9 October 2014.
