How time goes by so quickly. From the day both my children were born 8 weeks premature to the independent young people they are growing into. The worry and concern I had when they were born, has now reduced a little as years have passed. I remember the day of diagnosis of my son…. it was like being hit by a truck. The complete silence in the room as I shook my head. Trying to understand and make sense of what on earth Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy with a right hand difference was. Confusion and concern of the unknown.
Then came the endless questions which all had very little answers. “We will have to wait and observe” is what I was told. I wanted to jump 20 years ahead to see if my son would walk independently, talk and feed himself. I didn’t want to observe.
From the day my son was born, specialists, ultra sounds, x-rays, tests, operations and counting, therapists, early intervention and doctor’s visits became my daily routine.
I soon realised a notepad and pen was my best friend. Cross referencing up to 15 specialists in the first month of my son’s life while staying at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne. Not to mention keeping records of test results and outcomes.
Once we came home after two months in hospital, I was given a list of out patient check-ups to follow. Application forms and paperwork to fill out. I also was given reports and documents relating to the tests my son had. I didn’t realise this was the beginning of refining my administration skills.
A few years later my daughter was also born 8 weeks premature. I had to step up and organise myself better. I had piles of healthcare paperwork for each child sitting around my study. Post it notes with scribbled to do lists. Medical check-up reminders. Scans and results. A very unorganized mess.
The main problem I found was at each check-up, the healthcare provider would ask if I had certain reports, scan results, therapists reviews, G.P referrals. I never carried them on me. They were always at home. I would have to return home, mail or scan and email them to the healthcare provider who got them days later. This slowed down my children’s healthcare treatment. If I had the healthcare paperwork in the meetings, treatment would move forward quicker.
I also found while talking on the phone to organise therapy, apply for funding, organise further check-ups, I required all my children’s healthcare paperwork in an easy to search use device. Something that would allow me to flick through and find answers. Record conversations, look up future appointment dates.
This is when I began developing MyCare Information System. I designed healthcare forms that I could easily record details instantly, and store them all together in a portable device. They then developed into templates so I could print and use them constantly.
My children’s MyCare profiles have caught the eye of their healthcare providers at many of their appointments. Such positive feedback from the healthcare sector, gave me the idea to also help other individuals organise and plan their healthcare treatment.
This is how MyCare Information System was birthed. I have had such positive feedback from not only individuals using MyCare, but individuals healthcare providers who have shown great interest in the system. Having such an organised and planned system gives healthcare providers instant answers during check-ups. Especially when healthcare providers see many patients ran by the clock.
