Sue has two young children with medical conditions who need her daily attention, while battling her own health issues.
Sue’s one busy mum and wife who has two beautiful young boys. Between the two boys there is several doctors and specialists who treat her son’s individual medical conditions. Throw in Sue’s own health care doctors and specialists, you have a huge professional team of medical experts.
Sue was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). It is a complex condition in which the ovaries may have many cysts or follicles that rarely grow to maturity or produce eggs capable of being fertilised. PCOS is relatively common, especially in infertile women. It affects 12 to 18 per cent of women of reproductive age (between late adolescence and menopause).
Years later Sue also formed deep vein thrombosis (DVT). A deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot that forms in the deep veins of the leg. The clot may block a blood vessel, causing potentially serious health effects. While battling DVT, treatment was difficult because Sue is allergic to all medications.
Sue has also had to manage her asthma which is a common disease of the airways. The structures through which air passes when moving from your mouth and nose, right down to the smallest structures in your lungs. Asthma is the most widespread chronic health problem in Australia.
Sue’s oldest son also battles with asthma and he currently broke his collar bone. He has been diagnosed with allergies to medications such as penicillin. Her son also requires grommets. A grommet (small plastic or metal tube) allows air to enter the middle ear, preventing fluid build-up. Her son also has to have his adenoids and tonsils removed. The tonsils are two pads of glandular tissue in your throat that help fight infection. Tonsils are prone to inflammation and enlargement. This can lead to a condition called tonsillitis, which can be caused by either bacteria or viruses. The adenoids are lymph nodes located in the throat behind the nose. Infections commonly cause swollen or blocked adenoids. Symptoms include a blocked nose, snoring, sore throat and yellow or green mucus in the nose. Adenoid infections in children can lead to middle ear infections and glue ear. Sinusitis is another complication.
Sue’s youngest son has high allergies, asthma and there is a possibility he needs grommets too. He has been recently diagnosed with anaphylaxis to nuts. Anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock, is a severe allergic reaction that requires emergency medical attention. Exposure to an allergen, or trigger, can cause immediate and life-threatening symptoms such as breathing difficulties. Treatment involves an injection of adrenaline, usually given with an adrenaline auto-injector device (AAI). While all this is going on he also battles eczema on a daily basis. Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is an inherited, chronic skin condition that usually appears in early childhood. Patches of skin become red, dry and itchy and may weep. Eczema is not contagious. There is no cure, but it can be managed.
With each healthcare provider comes check-ups, forms, assessment reports and many questions. You can only imagine how organised Sue must be. MyCare Information Systems for each of her family became the central organisational tool that provided Sue instant answers.
Sue explains how life was before MyCare having paperwork for all three of them coming in and having to remember medication, future appointments and treatment plans.
Sue: At the start I had both the kids paperwork in a folder, but having a separate folder for the kids is great and is a lot easier.
Sue’s family suggested she have a MyCare Information System for herself.
Sue: After talking to my parents, they thought it would be a great idea for me to have one. If anything happens to me, my husband can grab the folder and go from there. I am basically allergic to every medication there is, so having something for him would be easier to grab and bring straight down to the hospital.
Turning up to appointments for her children is so much easier now. Being much more convenient and organised.
Sue: Having their own separate folder means I am not flipping through the one folder to find everything. I had everything stored in plastic pockets and now I have it all sectioned and makes it easier.
I have already been to doctors and specialists and they have just asked for photocopies of the information rather than filling out other forms.
Sue was able to save time during an appointment by not filling out the same information twice and providing the specialist with her MyCare forms with required information already recorded. Having answers instantly, allowing treatment to move forward.
MyCare healthcare forms and templates have provided Sue with organised records of each of their treatment.
Sue: It is easier to look up things especially when one specialist inquires about another specialist or where you are referred from. Having that information written down for who the children already see is a lot easier. It is also easier for me because if I go into hospital for my deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and they ask me who my specialist is, they have all the information on file.
Sue’s life is more organised using her MyCare Information System. Giving Sue back time to spend with her beautiful boys and husband instead of sorting out their healthcare paperwork, planning and treatment.
